I just got introduced to The Symphony of Science today. It’s a great site creating songs on-screen appearances by the likes of Carl Sagan, Bill Nye, Stephen Hawking and more. It’s a little like Auto-Tune the News, but with science. Great find!

I might be late to the game on this one, but GE has a new page on their site – Plug Into the Smart Grid | Augmented Reality. Here’s what you will need:

Computer with a webcam
Flash 10
A Printer
Paper for said printer
At least 15 minutes to gawk, then another 30-45 minutes to show your friends

But why write about it when a video will suffice:

Now, I work in After Effects nearly every day. I know tracking is a complicated process. Frankly, I’m amazed Flash is capable of pulling this off real-time, even with the easily trackable shape.

Facebook Duct Tape

Facebook has officially updated it’s page. Facebook Duct Tape no longer works. If there is enough interest, I will write one for the new Facebook layout.

UPDATE 3 (03/04/2009): Facebook is updating their home page in the near future, though they don’t say when. I can almost guarantee that FB Duct Tape will no longer work once the new home page goes live.

Have you seen this video on “The 25 things I hate about Facebook?” The important bit is at 2:54…

After seeing that, I thought “It can be done.” So I did it. This is not a Photoshop™. This is now what I see when I log in to Facebook:

How’d I do it? You’ll need the Stylish Firefox extension, and this script I wrote. The huge chunk of characters is the image. That’s the only way I found to get Stylish to load a local image instead of using a server.

Now enjoy your still useless, but now duct-taped sidebar on Facebook..

(I’m fully aware this is just a simple CSS background image, and it’s entirely pointless, but so is Facebook. I just wanted to say “I can duct-tape over that crap in Facebook.”)

UPDATE: Script has been updated to duct tape over the ad-bar, too.

Songsmith Ad Makes Me Want to Punch People

Songsmith. Decent idea, okay execution… terrible, awful, eye-bleeding ad. Seriously, videos like this make me wonder why no one throughout the entire process said “Hey, you know what? This is really a bad idea.” Or if someone did say that, why did no one (or not enough people) agree and change the direction? It’s almost like they’re playing it tongue-in-cheek (glow-in-the-dark towels?), but didn’t go far enough, so it just looks poorly directed, poorly acted, and makes me want to punch soneone… anyone.
